Organic Asphalt Shingles
Organic shingles are made with a base mat composed of felt paper, and this felt paper is saturated with asphalt to waterproof the layer. A second layer of asphalt is added, providing strength for the shingle and a layer for the ceramic granules that will be embedded into the top. The ceramic granules provide color, texture, and protection from UV rays, which can deteriorate the asphalt over time. Organic shingles are usually heavier, but are also more flexible and durable. They are prone to warping over time as they absorb moisture and dry out.
Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles
Fiberglass shingles have a base mat that is made from strands of fiberglass that are woven together tightly. The fiberglass mat is covered in asphalt, and the top layer is covered in ceramic granules, as with organic shingles. By using a mat made of fiberglass, less asphalt is needed to achieve the same strength and durability. The result is a lighter and thinner shingle that is more resistant to fire.
Types of Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles, regardless of what materials compose their base layer, are typically found in either three-tab or architectural varieties.
Three-tab shingles are manufactured with three tabs that are pre-cut along the lower edge. When the top half of the shingle is covered by the next run, they appear to be made of three separate shingles instead of only one. This gives the illusion of more depth and requires less material overall, which makes them an economical choice.
Architectural shingles are not pre-cut at the factory to resemble multiple shingles. These shingles are also laminated with another layer of asphalt. This extra layer creates additional depth and helps to provide reinforcement to the shingle, giving it more durability and making it more waterproof. These shingles cost more upfront than traditional three-tab shingles but have a longer life expectancy.
We are proud to use Owens Corning certified shingles on every project. We recommend these shingles for their exceptional beauty, performance, and the wide range of available colors and styles.
