Common Window Types

  • Double-hung – Double-hung windows have two sashes which slide vertically up and down inside the frame. These windows can open from either the top or the bottom but remain inside the frame so as to avoid protruding from the home.
  • Casement – Casement windows are hinged and open through turning a nearby crank. They can be hinged on either side and are typically seen opening outward.
  • Awning – Awning windows open outward, and are hinged at the top. These windows let fresh air in from the left or right as well as the bottom, and can be installed around a stationary window.
  • Picture – Picture windows are large, stationary windows that let in a maximum amount of light and provide excellent views of the outdoors.
  • Transom – These narrow windows can be stationary, or operating to allow air in, and can be mounted above a door or separate window for additional light.
  • Slider – Slider windows have at least one operating window that slides over or past the other window in a horizontal manner, and are most often used in contemporary or modern style houses.
  • Stationary – Stationary windows don’t open, but can be formed into nearly any shape or angle desired, and are most often found alongside operating windows.
  • Bay, or Bow – These windows are designed to provide additional interior space by protruding from the exterior of the house. They are a combination of windows, often made with a stationary window in the middle which is flanked by either casement or double-hung windows.
